The call for applications for the 2025/2026 University of Surrey AI Scholarship is now open.

The UKRI AI Centre for Doctoral Training in AI for Digital Media Inclusion combines the world-leading expertise of the Surrey Institute for People-Centred AI (PAI) at the University of Surrey, a pioneer in AI technologies for the creative industries (vision, audio, language, machine learning) and StoryFutures at Royal Holloway University of London, leader in creative production and audience experience (arts, psychology, user research, creative production). 

About university:

The University of Surrey is a public research university in Guildford, Surrey, England. The university received its royal charter in 1966, along with a number of other institutions following recommendations in the Robbins Report. The institution was previously known as Battersea College of Technology and was located in Battersea Park, London. Its roots however, go back to Battersea Polytechnic Institute, founded in 1891 to provide further and higher education in London, including its poorer inhabitants.

Scholarship eligibility requirements:

To be considered for the University of Surrey AI Scholarship, you must:

  • have a bachelor’s degree in a related field.
  • demonstrate academic excellence, a passion for research in AI for digital media inclusion, and evidence of effective teamwork.

Scholarship Application Guidelines:

To apply for the University of Surrey AI Scholarship, you will need to submit the online forms and supporting documentation.

  1.  Online CDT Application Form 1 
  2. Online Additional Information Form 2 
  3. A copy of your CV (2 pages max.) to CDT_AI@surrey.ac.uk
  4. A Case study (600 words max.) to CDT_AI@surrey.ac.uk (please label your files clearly with your LASTNAME.Name)

 Stage 3: Recruitment workshop 

Shortlisted candidates will be invited to a recruitment workshop at the University of Surrey in March 2025 (there will be an online option for those who need to attend remotely).

Scholarship Benefits:


The University of Surrey AI Scholarship funding is provided for full-time candidates for a period of 4 years and covers:

  • UK home tuition fees
  • Tax-free maintenance payment based on UKRI’s minimum rate: UKRI recently announced a stipend increase for 2025/2026 to be £20,780 per year from 1st October 2025.
  • Enhanced supplement of £4,000 per year
  • As a doctoral student, you may be able to access additional funding to cover the cost of other related training and development opportunities.
