SCHOLARSHIP: University of Sussex Stuart Hall, UK International Scholarship for Postgraduate | Ph.D Students
The University of Sussex and Stuart Hall Foundation are partnering to offer a 4-year PhD scholarship for Black British Postgraduate Researchers in Arts and Humanities or Social Sciences.
About university:
The University of Sussex is a public research university located in Falmer, East Sussex, England. It lies mostly within the city boundaries of Brighton and Hove. Its large campus site is surrounded by the South Downs National Park, and provides convenient access to central Brighton 5.5 kilometres (3.4 mi) away. The university received its royal charter in August 1961, the first of the plate glass university generation.

Scholarship eligibility requirements:
To apply for the 2025 University of Sussex Scholarship, interested candidates must;
- Have or expect to obtain a minimum 2:1 degree from a recognized university.
- Be new students starting in Autumn 2025
- Be from a Black British background
- Qualify for Home fees
- Be candidates whose proposed research clearly addresses social justice issues and can contribute to addressing barriers and discrimination facing marginalized groups.
Selection Criteria
Selection is based on:
- Academic background and/or relevant experiential learning.
- A strong research proposal addressing social justice and marginalization.
- Panel review by Directors of Doctoral Study in relevant schools.
- Shortlisted candidates will be interviewed, and final selection will be made by the Stuart Hall Foundation.
Scholarship Application Guidelines:
To apply for the University of Sussex Stuart Hall Scholarship, interested and qualified candidates should;
- First you must apply for a PhD place at Sussex on our online portal.
- Then you can submit a Scholarship application (download from the document link at bottom of this page) written in a way that can be understood by a non–specialist to the Sussex Researcher School pgr-scholarships@sussex.ac.uk.
- Shortlisted candidates will be notified after the closing date.
- Shortlisted candidates will be notified after the closing date.
- Shortlisted candidates will be invited to attend an interview prior to a final shortlist being provided
to the Stuart Hall Foundation. - The Stuart Hall Foundation will then make the final selection of the
successful applicant
Scholarship Benefits:
Fees covered will include:
- A maintenance allowance for 4 years at UKRI levels (currently at £19,237)
- UK PhD fees for 4 years, or 1 year Masters + 3 years PhD fees
- Up to £3000 in research and fieldwork costs.
- Access to Stuart Hall Foundation resources and networks, including the annual gathering of Scholars and Fellows.
